January 23, 2010 at 10:31 AM If you weren’t already aware, Microsoft release an out-of-band update (not release during the normal Windows Updates Cycle) on Thursday that impacts almost all versions of Windows and IE. You need to get this installed ASAP. Details from Microsoft are listed below. This alert is to provide you with an overview of Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-002, the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer, released (out-of-band) on Thursday, January 21. This bulletin addresses eight vulnerabilitie

SharePoint 2010 uses the “sprite” technique in some of its default layouts. Sprite is a method of showing multiple images on your site that are really just a portion of one larger image. A benefit is that it reduces HTTP traffic since you are downloading more images in one request. You can read more about the technique in these blogs:
CSS Sprites: Image Slicing’s Kiss of Death | IE6, CSS Sprites and Alpha Transparency | How To: Optimize Your Site with Image Sprites

September 3, 2009 at 3:14 PMDesigner workflows can be great but I certainly ran into some major frustrations working with them with Designer 2007. One of those frustrations was not being able to associate a Workflow with a specific Tasks list. SharePoint will, be default, take the first Task list available and associate the workflow to that list. Fine you might say but if in time, you need to change that workflow/task association, you were pretty much in for trouble.
Fixing this is not straightforward as we can't control

September 3, 2009 at 2:06 PMSharePoint Search 2010 offers new query capabilities that were not available in SharePoint 2007. Some of the new capabilities added are not ground breaking as most of them can be found right now somewhere on CodePlex or are available for sale by third parties. But, it's exciting to have those new functionalities finally as part of SharePoint out-of-the-box. Reality is that sometimes, it's difficult and risky to use code at a customer coming from CodePlex or somewhere else as it might have a too

Starting tonight PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server) will begin broadcasting webcasts for 24 hours straight. These webcasts include many topics, however, I am most interested in those surrounding SQL Server Maintenance and Business Intelligence. As of now I plan on attending at least 11 of these sessions (more depending on my ability to keep my eyes open!) which start tonight (9/1) and run every hour until the conclusion tomorrow night (9/2). Here is a list of all the webcasts

March 30, 2009 at 10:21 PMIf you missed the recent story in the New York Times about the compromise of over 1,000 computers affiliated with the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (OHHDL), read it. Or better yet, read the report published by the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. I promise you it will be one of the best spent (and perhaps scariest) 30 minutes of your week. After reading this, one can surmise that social malware represents the future of computer-based crime. If you've been paying attentio

December 18, 2008 at 8:46 AMDuring a recent deployment of SCMDM I ran into a little snag while publishing the internal IIS web site on the Enrollment Server. Because my client was using an ISA Server 2006 Array I needed to get the exact same certificate on both array nodes in order to configure the Listener correctly. If you follow the technical article Configuring External and Internal Firewalls in Mobile Device Manager then the requested certificate will not be configured to allow exporting the private key. And because

December 17, 2008 at 8:59 AMI feel a little silly just finding out this little tip recently as I can’t count how many times I’ve had to manually re-join a Windows workstation or member server to a domain in my life. This is a pretty common procedure as various issues can sometimes cause problems with the secure channel communications between workstations and domain controllers in an Active Directory domain. Rejoining the domain reestablishes the trusted partnership and in most cases resolves the issue. The tried-and-true

November 5, 2008 at 9:14 AMRecently when I was setting up a medium server farm I ran into some issues with the search service. The SSP created correctly but when you would click on Search Settings you would get the error Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream. Nothing else would display on the page. Also, in the System Event Viewer of two of the servers I received the error A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credentials. September 23, 2008 at 9:51 AMMicrosoft recently updated KB 946517 which addresses the memory leak around the SharePoint OWStimer Process to include Windows Server 2008 as well as Windows Server 2003. This memory leak has been a problem with WSSv3 since it's inception almost two years ago. Unfortunately this problem had plagued Windows Server 2008 since it has IIS6 compatibility as well. To gain immediate access to the hotfix browse to the KB and click on Hotfix Download Available at the top of the screen. Follow the next

I am presently developing a large, complex SharePoint application whose deployment consists of about 10 SharePoint Solutions. Since functionality is still under development, I am very frequently rebuilding WSPs and upgrading them.
My standard way of doing this was via the command shell:
stsadm -o upgradesolution -name [solution name] -filename [solution path] -immediate -allowgacdeployment
Less frequently I was adding Solutions to the Solution store (using stsadm -o addsolution) an

September 15, 2008 at 6:10 PMMy home lab server is starting to get so many virtual servers to hold all the products I've been testing that I decided to deploy Windows Server Update Services 3.0 in order to help manage all the updates, as well as to learn yet another product. The setup and configuration was pretty straight forward, but after configuring group policies and double and triple checking them, I was only getting a couple servers to appear under the All Computers in the Update Services management console. I'm pleased to announce my third PointCast in the Windows 2008 Server series. It covers Rights Management Services and provides a demonstration of its integration with SharePoint Portal Server 2007. I'm a big fan of RMS and I encourage anyone who needs persistent document protection to take a close look at it.
There is a lot to talk about here, but I did my best to keep it short. The duration is a little over 20 minutes. [ web / iPOD (coming soon) @ 29,533KB ]

March 12, 2008 at 1:26 PMIn a recent migration project I needed to move nearly 2TB of mailbox data between Exchange 2003 servers in the same organization, to the tune of 100-200GB per day. The first couple days went fine, with excellent performance, but as more mailboxes were moved to the target server and mail delivery processes and user connections increased, move-performance began to degrade to the point that mailbox moves started to spit out generic MAPI errors and failed. After a quick check of the application log

When you install Certificate Services on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008, you have the option to add Web Enrollment Pages. These pages are needed if you need a higher level of assurance for your certificates than Auto Enrollment provides. In other words, they facilitate a process by which:
A user submits a request for a certificate, which is stored in a queue on a Windows Certificate Authority.
The request is independently authenticated by a 3rd party entity

Yesterday while deploying files to the GAC I got the following error; Assembly Cache Viewer - Install failed.
I have deployed files to the GAC many times in the past and have never seen this error. Immediately I figured this had something to do with Windows Server 2008. I tired a number of fixes but ultimately I had to disable User Account Control (UAC) and restart. Once the server was back online I was able to drag DLL files to the GAC without issue.

In keeping with the Windows Server 2008 theme, I'm posting my second PointCast, which covers some of the new features in failover clustering. It includes a demo in which I fail over an active node of a CCR cluster to a passive one located on a different IP subnet. This is something I wish we had years ago! All in all, I've been very impressed with clustering on Windows Server 2008. It's come a long way since the good 'ol days of Windows 2000.

I recently posted a PointCast discussing Active Directory snapshots in Windows Server 2008. In it, I point out that one of the limitations of using snapshots is the fact that they can't be used to recover deleted user objects.
Fortunately, with PowerShell and a little bit of scripting knowledge you can create a convenient way to restore deleted user objects from the proverbial digital grave. Once this is accomplished, you can use a snapshot to recover other important attributes (group member

From time to time, the topic of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) comes up both internally and with our customers. Usually, these conversations involve explaining or clarifying something that was read in a document somewhere or overheard in a previous discussion. It's become apparent to me that in order to talk intelligently about PKI, a fair amount of context is required, so I figured I'd start a series of blogs discussing the challenges of PKI design and implementation. I believe there is valu

July 25, 2007 at 11:53 AMA couple of interesting questions came up recently regarding Information Rights Management that I thought I'd write about.
What is the impact of IRM-protected email on Outlook Instant Search and Windows Desktop Search?
Emails protected with IRM cannot be indexed because the body of the message is encrypted. The header information is not encrypted, though, so things like server side rules and search by header information does work.
This is a header from a standard Outlook email:
