Let's say that you are going to deploy OCS for a 50 person organization with the following requirements: Internal and external IM (like PIC or federation) Integration to your PBX Archiving Internal and external LiveMeeting / voice conferencing / audio conferencing To meet these requirements, you need, at a minimum OCS Standard Edition Server OCS Mediation server OCS archiving server OCS edge server Now let's face it: 4 servers for 50 people is a decent amount of hardwar ... I and most of my colleagues use Virtualization extensively for testing and demonstrations, for example with beta software or CTP's. Today I was using it for this Webinar.   About two hours before the Webinar, I was surprised to discover that my Virtual PC did not appear to be working.   I don’t know if anyone else has encountered this yet. This one was weird, but easy to fix once you figure out what’s wrong.   The symptoms: Virtual PC starts and an icon is created on the task bar. Howev ... [more]

Here is the scenario for you.  You are encountering an issue with a Microsoft product, and you find a KB that exactly matches your issue.   The only problem is, it looks like the only way to get the patch is to call Microsoft, give them a credit card number or a EA or partner ID, get the patch sent out, and then the charges are rescinded. There is another option.  I don't recall who found it first, but here it is for all.   ... [more]

For those of you that need to test such things as Migrations or Identity Integration using MIIS and find yourself with a need to virtualize Novell on a Virtual Server 2005 Host, you are out of luck right? Microsoft currently does not support Novell on Virtual Server 2005. However you can install Novell onto Virtual Server 2005 by manipulation of the install CD drivers. You will need a minimum of 512 MB of memory for your Virtual Instance and Novell 5.1 or above. This will also require some ... [more]

So how do you reduce the time it takes to build out complex lab environments? You may find it easier to build one Parent Disks for your OS i.e. Windows 2003 Server with SP1,  and then save as a template or Parent disk. This will allow you to quickly build your lab without building a new server OS for each virtual instance. Using differencing disks as described by Microsoft  http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/d9ef5bd9-6ca2-488b-a960-f3f8ecd6ecc51033.mspx   You can asso ... [more]

So you need to completely isolate your LAB environment with no connectivity between the Production and Virtual Hosts. The customer states that we need connectivity to the Virtuals on the Virtual Host but the Virtuals themselves must not be able to directly communicate with the Virtual Host server which is also a member of the production domain.  Now for the problem and the solution.  Everyone knows that we can record existing CDs as ISO images which can be loaded on a Virtual instance as a ... The structural relationship between channels in MCMS is hierarchical, with channels capable of containing both postings and other channels. Postings are "leaves" and channels are the "branches," just as are files and folders, respectively, in a file system. Although there are many possible semantic relationships between a parent channel and its subchannels, it is likely that the postings contained in each are similar to one another. Subchannels may be the sections of a p ... [more]

The essential challenge of creating MCMS navigation controls is that they must be completely dynamic - that is, they must render a correct navigational structure based on a posting's position in an arbitrary channel hierarchy. "Arbitrary" is the key word in the precending sentence -- using the Site Manager, the administrator can create whatever channel structure she chooses and can change it at any time. So a basic assumption of navigation code is that the position of any item in t ... [more]

I've had some exposure to work with some of the virtualiztion products recently and I thought a blog depicting how they compare would be helpful to those not as familiar with the variety of products offered today and how they compare. The document attached addresses the subject of this blog. Happy reading. Mark Myers MMyers@PointBridge.com   Attachment ... [more]

My first project after landing here at PointBridge was a large virtual server migration/new implementation of between 250 and 3000 physical servers from Wolters Kluwer. (The varied number of servers is wide - at the time of this posting, WK has an undecided number of servers they will dedicate to virtuializaion.) Attached to this post is a document I've prepared to get enumerate some best practices and recommendations disclosed to those looking to get their feet wet with ESX. I will be adding ... [more]
